"the rarely addressed & richly entangled challenge of treating enmeshment & the undeveloped self"

WORKSHOP by jeff conway & wendy behary

There are 2 main goals for this workshop:
- To provided a thorough description of the intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics that create the Enmeshment & Undeveloped Self Schema. We also intend to describe what coping styles and the most common Modes we observe in the "Enmeshed Person".
- To present the unique challenges in the treatment room and the most effective ST approaches for healing Enmeshment and and developing "Selfness," with a special emphasis on the Therapeutic Relationship.

Common Potential Causes/Factors that Cultivate the Enmeshment Schema: A fragile Caregiver, a demanding Caregiver and a highly sensitive and intuitive child who, temperamentally, via attuned mirroring, developed a premature "caregiver" mode. Some combination of these early dynamics inculcated a deep and lasting impression on the child that any separation from the Caregiver or sense of betrayal to the Caregiver's implicit and explicit expectations would lead to dire and unbearable consequences. Description of a Patient with the Enmeshment Schema: Their Sense of Self Identity and Stability seem entirely dependent of the approval/appreciation/value the other in the relationship gives them. Without this sense of approval and homeostasis the Sense of Self feels threatened and flailing. All ST approaches will be discussed, but a special emphasis will be placed on the Therapeutic Relationship and the therapist's ability to authentically agree, disagree, and challenge the patient. The therapist must also be willing to use empathic confrontation as the "Enmeshed Patient" will often attempt to solicit the therapist's approval. Power Point Lecture with Case Examples and Role-Plays.

  • Impart a thorough understanding of the origins of this Schema
  • Cultivate a deeper and more complex understanding of the intense emotional turmoil caused by this Schema and the challenges it poses to forming intimate relationships
  • Educate on the most successful Cognitive, Behavioral & Emotion Focused Strategies.
  • Expand and deepen the role of the Therapeutic Relationship as a healing agent for this Schema

The workshop is intended for: Beginners and Advanced

Why Schema Therapy?

Schema therapy has been extensively researched to effectively treat a wide variety of typically treatment resistant conditions, including Borderline Personality Disorder and Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Read our summary of the latest research comparing the dramatic results of schema therapy compared to other standard models of psychotherapy.
