Introduction:
This 3-day workshop is designed for clinicians with some prior knowledge of Schema Therapy who wish to develop their skills in working with Borderline Personality Disorder and Cluster C personality difficulties, including avoidant, dependent and obsessive-compulsive personality patterns.

The training is not limited to eating-disorder work. Its primary focus is on common and challenging schema mode patterns encountered across BPD and Cluster C presentations, including emotional dysregulation, overcontrol, avoidance, dependency, helplessness, pseudo-vulnerability, self-punishment, detachment, shame and guilt. Participants will learn experiential strategies that can be applied across a wide range of problematic coping behaviours, whether or not an eating disorder is present.

Particular attention will be given to working with under-controlled and over-controlled coping modes, distinguishing genuine vulnerability from Helpless/Hopeless Surrender and pseudo-vulnerability, working with Critic modes that serve a protective or controlling function, including the Flagellating Overcontroller, and responding to avoidant, compliant and detached modes that can create therapeutic impasses.

Eating disorders will be used as an important clinical application of this broader mode-based framework. Eating problems are common in people with BPD and Cluster C personality difficulties, yet may be overlooked when treatment is focused primarily on personality disorder symptoms. Recent evidence suggests that close to one-third of people with BPD meet criteria for an eating disorder, highlighting the importance of recognising and addressing eating-related coping alongside wider personality difficulties. Participants will have opportunities to practise chairwork, imagery rescripting, empathic confrontation and limited reparenting, with a strong emphasis on translating formulation into practical interventions for difficult in-session modes.
