Virtual Group Schema Therapy

with Joan Farrell, Paul Kasyanik, Rita Younan, and Ida Shaw 



This 60 - minute webinar will discuss the applicability of Group Schema Therapy (GST) via a telehealth format.  The pandemic has made the need for all therapy to be offered online.  Group has been no exception.  Joan, Rita, Ida and Paul discuss the benefits and challenges of providing group via telehealth and maintaining the virtual connection amongst group members and facilitators.  The webinar will make reference to group process via telehealth, experiential exercises unique to GST and how to deliver online.  Technical issues and what to consider are also discussed.  

About the Presenters

Joan Farrell

Joan is an Adjunct Professor in Clinical Psychology at Indiana University-Purdue University.She is Research director of the Indiana University School of Medicine Center for Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment & Researchand co-directs the Schema Therapy Institute Midwest-Indianapolis. She developed with Ida Shaw a group treatment model consistent withSchema Therapy. Influenced by clinical experience with BPD and by the work of Jeff Young, they adapted ST interventions and limited reparenting to a group and developed uniquely group interventions to accomplish ST goals.They established outpatientgroup ST (GST)in a specialty clinic for BPD, which was awarded an Indiana Governor’s Showcase Award in Mental Health. They developed an inpatient ST program that combines individual and group modalities and directed a dedicated BPD ST unit for ten years at a university affiliated psychiatric hospital. Their GST model was evaluated in a randomized controlled trial with a grant award from the USNational Institute of Mental Health. GST demonstrated strong effects in reduced BPD symptoms and improved global function as well as high recovery rates. Joan is co-Principal investigator with Arnoud Arntz for theinternational trial to furtherevaluate the GST model.She is the author with Ida Shaw of three books on ST: Group Schema Therapy for BPD, Wiley, 2012; The Schema Therapy Clinician’s Guide,Wiley, 2014 and Experiencing Schema Therapy from the Inside-Out: A Self-Practice/Self-Reflections Workbook, Guilford Press, 2018and a DVD Set demonstrating GST (IVAH, 2011)


Ida Shaw

Ida Shaw Joan Farrell, Ph.D. and , M.A. are ISST Certified Trainer-Supervisors in Individual and Group SchemaTherapy; Ida holds the same level in Child-Adolescent Schema Therapy. They train internationally (16 countries) and are recognized as enthusiastic and motivating trainers who blend didactic and experiential elements in a compelling manner. Joan is an adjunct professor of clinical psychology at Indiana-Purdue University and director of research at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) Center for BPD Treatment & Research. Ida is the training director of the Center. Most of their time is spent in training and supervision to pass on their learning and experience to the next generation of psychotherapists. They have published three books on ST. Their most recent is the basis for this workshop: “Experiencing Schema Therapy from the Inside-Out: A Self-Practice/Self-Reflection Workbook for Therapists”, Guilford, 2018.
