SCHEDULE

DAY 2 FRIDAY JUNE 25th

SEGMENT 9: 7.15 - 8.15

TRACK 1:

KEYNOTE: Reconciling Resentment and Regret in the Change Phase of Treatment

with Wendy Behary

There is an inevitable and predictable loss when a client begins their transformational journey in treatment – even when that loss is in the interest of their health and wellness.  While it would seem a celebratory experience, giving up the burdens of longstanding schema-driven distress, it is also a time of grief.

Beyond the loss of that which (albeit painful) is familiar and predictable, there is the loss of longstanding underlying expectations, wishes, and dreams; the lingering images of possibility… that someday their loved one might express love, nurturing, empathy, even remorse for the deprivation, rejection, neglect, abuse, or betrayal they showed.

As these clients begin to make sense out of their emotional autobiographies, schemas and modes, some may experience a phase where they get hijacked by a fixed focus on resentments toward self and others. Held hostage by regrets for not figuring it out sooner, and for “wasting their lives” on “foolish fears, wishes, and actions”, they struggle to move into the healthy (scary unknown) change phase.
